I am a Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), and an Astronomer with UC Observatories (UCO). I am also an Affiliate of the Ocean Sciences Department at UCSC.
My research spans the gas in, around and in-between galaxies and across the cosmos: the interstellar medium, circumgalatic medium, and intergalactic medium. In recent years I have worked primarily on fast radio bursts (FRBs) as cosmological probes — including the localization of bursts to their host galaxies and the use of their dispersion measures to carry out a census of the Universe’s missing baryons.
I am also a dedicated builder of open-source scientific software. I founded or help lead projects such as PypeIt (a Python spectroscopic data-reduction pipeline), linetools, and the FRBs software organization.
More recently I have been applying data-science and machine-learning methods developed for astronomy to oceanography, through the ocean-colour and Sea-Meets-the-Stars efforts. This oceanography research has been accelerated by a Simons Pivot Fellowship.
